In our Summer 2018 edition, check out:
1) The "Lost" Holes of Gibson Island Club
2) MacRaynor Template Hole Rankings
MacRaynor is portmanteau of "C.B. Macdonald" and "Seth Raynor." Called the "Evangelist of Golf," C.B. Macdonald is the father of American golf course architecture. The contribution of his seminal creation - National Golf Links of America - on generations of architects that followed cannot be understated. Neither can the contributions of the second half our duo - Seth Raynor. Raynor studied engineering at Princeton and his skills as a surveyor made him an unparalleled router of golf courses. The two employed Macdonald's concept of "ideal holes" (which we shorthandedly call "Template Holes") modeled on the great golf holes of the British Isles. From time to time, we will also profile the work of a third member of their team (Charles Banks) who served as Raynor's construction foreman and later became an architect in his own right employing the same template holes concepts, albeit with a degree of success we feel is less meritorious than Macdonald and Raynor.
We're a group of enthusiasts who love Macdonald and Raynor golf. The thrill of playing a golf course designed by Macdonald or Raynor is difficult to describe. The anticipation driving in is unlike anything in the game. If a golfer has played but one of their designs, he has an idea what is coming. How will this Redan compare? Will this Alps be blind? Is there a Biarritz?
We're strong believers that the unique fun of a MacRaynor course is comparing the respective merits of its template holes. We've introduced the first ever ranking of MacRaynor Template holes. Disagree? Drop us a line and plead your case to the panel. If a hole isn't controversial, it isn't any good.
